Why Responsible Growth Matters Here

Our region is one of the fastest‑growing parts of the state, with tens of thousands of new homes approved in recent years. Current law prohibits charging developers impact fees, so the cost of new infrastructure improvements that benefit developers is borne by the current taxpayers. Existing residents are already seeing more traffic, longer drive times, worsening stormwater flooding, and development creeping into low‑lying and environmentally sensitive areas. During a serious storm, those same crowded roads become evacuation routes; if we keep approving dense development without upgrading infrastructure or respecting natural floodplains, we risk trapping people in harm’s way when the next big hurricane hits.

What We Support

The Blue Beacons support growth management policies that put safety and community ahead of unchecked sprawl:
  • Repeal laws prohibiting impact fees and tie major new developments to realistic, funded plans for road capacity, stormwater systems, and evacuation routes.
  • Limiting or denying high‑density development in known flood‑prone and evacuation‑critical areas, rather than repeating past mistakes that make flooding and traffic worse.
  • Prioritizing investments in resilient infrastructure—elevated roads, improved drainage, and protected wetlands—that reduce both everyday flooding and storm surge impacts
  • Ensuring working families and long‑time residents have a real voice in land‑use decisions, instead of leaving these choices solely to developers and insiders.
  • Ensure our representatives fight for residents and not developers and real estate interests.

We support responsible governance at the local level that accomplishes the goals set forth above. Please talk to your friends and neighbors and convince them that changes must be made at the commissioner level.

    Speak at planning board, council, and commission meetings when large developments are proposed, and demand that officials show how evacuation, road capacity, and flooding will be handled before they vote yes.
